New Zealand has many caves, mainly due to its volcanic nature. These caves were formed when lava flowing over the top started cooling down while lava in the lower levels were still flowing, finally leaving behind an empty space such as a tunnel. On the picture, you can see clearly the way to go inside, thanks to the camera flash, but in fact it is quite an adventure to walk through these cavities. The tunnels are pitch dark and you have to be ready to get wet (and cold) as most of the caves are undergroung water channels. So I really recommend you to go with someone, especially if you are a bit afraid of the dark.
