If you like to take the ferry, Rangitoto is another good option. It is one of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and was formed around 600 or 700 years ago as a result of different volcanic eruptions. Over the centuries, the remains of lava flows has hardened to such an extent that even plants and other vegetation have been unable to crack through the rocks and turn them into soil. So as the vegetation still in the primary steps of colinization, it is easy to guess that Rangitoto is a pretty young island.
