Glow worms

If you walk into these caves, you will most likely find yourself under a ceiling full of stars, or rather, under the bright lure of the glow worms. These animals (Arachnocampa luminosa) are an endemic mosquito of New Zealand that spends most of its life (from 6 to 12 months) hanging in damp dark spots. They knit a very sticky thread, which is used to capture the prey that respond to the light blue glow and get caught in the net. So, obviously the brightly glowing ones are the hungriest.
